Colin Nash Restaurant

If you ever find yourself near The Retreat in Christchurch and craving something indulgent yet distinctive, Colin Nash Restaurant is a name to remember. Tucked away in a serene location, this spot doesn’t try to scream for attention-it quietly earns it. From the moment you walk through the wheelchair-accessible entrance and into its thoughtfully designed space, there’s a sense that this is a restaurant run with both heart and high standards.

Colin Nash Restaurant has carved out its own corner in the culinary scene by leaning into quality over gimmicks. One of the most talked-about features? Its Lamb Wellington. This isn’t your everyday pub classic. The flaky pastry wraps around a tender cut of lamb that’s both juicy and perfectly seasoned. It’s rich, comforting, and plated with finesse. For diners who prefer something light but flavorful, the Power Soup is a surprise hit-brothy, nutritious, and packed with vibrant ingredients that balance flavor and health.

Now, let’s talk starters. If you're the adventurous type, the Escargot might just win you over. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of familiar comfort food here too. The Dogfish Scampi with Chunky Tartar Sauce is a clever twist on the British seaside classic, offering a crunch that contrasts nicely with the creamy tang of the tartar. Add a side of granola for a lighter bite, or go big with a plate of Nasi Lemak, Colin Nash’s respectful take on the Malaysian staple-fragrant coconut rice, sambal, egg, and crispy anchovies done right.

Desserts? Absolute showstoppers. The Lava Cake melts with each spoonful, releasing warm chocolate that’s sinfully good. And if you’re celebrating a special occasion, the Birthday Cake feels more like a curated event than just a dessert-visually stunning, decadently layered, and surprisingly balanced in sweetness. There’s also a Chocolate Brownie that comes with just the right chew and a satisfying cocoa punch. For a more delicate option, the Tiramisu delivers all the coffee-soaked goodness you’d expect, elevated with elegant presentation.

Coffee lovers will feel at home here. Their Cappuccino game is strong-silky foam, bold espresso, and served just at the right temperature. Whether you’re visiting for brunch or winding down after dinner, it’s the kind of drink that completes the experience. And speaking of drinks, the wine list is something Colin Nash Restaurant takes seriously. Whether you’re after a bold red to match your lamb or a crisp white to pair with seafood, there’s a curated selection that’s clearly been chosen with care. Cocktails and spirits are also on the menu, each crafted to match the restaurant’s sophisticated yet approachable vibe.

What also makes this place stand out is the ambience-casual but elevated, intimate without feeling exclusive. The outdoor seating is a great bonus on sunny days, offering a breezy escape surrounded by calm. It’s also a solid pick for solo diners. You’ll feel just as comfortable enjoying a meal alone here as you would on a date or out with friends.

While they don’t offer delivery or takeaway, the dine-in experience is clearly where they shine. Every detail, from the service to the plating, feels like it’s designed to be savored in the moment. For anyone who values attentive hospitality, beautiful presentation, and a kitchen that respects both global flavors and local produce, Colin Nash Restaurant checks all the right boxes.

Returned for a second time in as many years to find some delicious dishes, a very pleasant bar area in particular & a bright open restaurant. The 10 hour pork was very good as was the brisket, however the beetroot tart & table vegetables were not good. The pastry on the tart was too hard to eat (which we did mention) and the table vegetables were just mush. We did have others dishes and pictures are in this review however they are not dishes I’d highly recommend. We were served an amuse-bouche fish cake which was not memorable. This is my honest opinion and I will try again in the future.

Great food let down by the environment and, of all things, the cutlery! First up the food itself was very good. Creative and pretty well executed, interesting flavours and ingredients - I'd never eaten puffball before, nor even heard of it being served! Delicious. The pigeon was a little tough, which would have been fine had not every knife in the place been worn smooth, the serrations all largely now flat; I've used cardboard cutlery that cut better then that, seriously. And the music. Oh my god. Imagine the worst possible naff elevator music, cheap electronic covers of cheesy songs which were all awful to begin with. Only reason the atmosphere got more than 1 star was the light airy feel the place had from the huge windows along one side.

We went for an evening meal and it was amazing, my wife is gluten free and vegetarian and I can't take Gluten. The food was beyond what we expected the attention to detail was great. I would recommend a visit to the restaurant. The staff and atmosphere and chef make the place.

Fantastic experience. Waiting staff are very attentive, polite and engaging without being intrusive. Food was incredible, on this occasion we came for afternoon tea. All the homemade cakes and scones were delicious, and they accommodated gluten-free without issue. Lovely atmosphere. Always very generous food portions.
